I scored these 3 cigar boxes from a local cigar shop that will make great guitars. I followed the same basic process as the first CBG I made, with a few refinements to my procedure. If you haven’t seen that build, you can check out parts 1 and 2 here.

I have made several improvements to my process since the 1st build. One of those was to carve the bulk of the neck with a Spokeshave. A spokeshave is a great tool for removing wood. Its much faster than using a rasp and gives great results. Another process improvement was in cutting the fret slots. On the first guitar, I cut the slots using only my scroll saw. This didn’t give consistent results. This time I started the slots using the scroll saw, and completed them using a small flush trim saw. This took more time, but gave much better results. I have since bought an actual fret slotting saw, made specifically for this process. It will definitely speed up the process for next time. Another improvement was to buy a good set of metric forstner bits for my drill press. On the first guitar build, I had to fumble around trying to drill the correct hole sizes using the wrong size drill bits. It worked out, but having the correct drill bits made a huge difference for these guitars. Finally, by using an arbor press to press in the frets, saved me a ton of time in fretting the instruments. No hammering in the frets. You can get an inexpensive arbor press and make your own fret press pretty easily.
So, how did they turn out? Check out the video below.
