My Dining Table has seen better days. Whatever finish is on it, is in terrible shape, and needs to be redone. Since this isn’t a high end table, I’d rather just build a new one, than refinish this old one. Unfortunately, that project doesn’t fit into my schedule at this time, so, a quick refinish will have to do for now.
In my best efforts to get this done as fast as possible, I started with 60 grit on my random orbit sander and sanded all the old finish off the top. I’m not messing with the legs. Their finish is acceptable for now. Once I got the old finish sanded off, I applied some light stain to the bare wood. Then I applied several coats of stain/polyurethane mix, sanding in between coats. For the final coat, I thinned the poly to a wipe on poly thickness, and applied the final coat. After a day or 2 of drying. The “new” table is done.
I am glad I decided to do this. Hopefully, this will buy some more time out of this old table. It does have a fancier feel to it now. Instead of the crusty old finish, it feels a lot higher quality. Its an easy project, you can do in a weekend on your table, or a sweet garage sale find.
