With the Christmas season upon us, I thought some homemade ornaments would be a fun project. It would also give me a great opportunity to get my daughter involved with a project in the shop.
We started with a branch that came down in our yard. Using the bandsaw, we sliced it into discs, and after a little bit of sanding we were ready to drill some holes for the string. To begin sealing the wood, we gave our discs a bath in danish oil. I let them soak in the oil for a little while to allow the wood to soak up as much oil as it could. I am trying to avoid having these really dry out and split. Once the oil had dried, we began painting the ornaments. We used acrylic paint to decorate them for Christmas. The paint was sealed up with a couple coats of spray laquer. Then all that was left to do, was to attach some strings and hang them up.
We had a blast making these. Its so fun to see my daughter working on a project, and even cooler for me to be able to work together on them. These are a very simple project, and a great one to get kids involved. They can help with most steps of this. Its a great way to introduce them to some of the different steps of a project.
