A Friend of mine asked me to do some work on his project guitar. It turned into replacing the whole neck. I decided it would turn out better if I just made him a new neck.
I chose some nice Quilted Maple that I had on hand, and cut the neck and fretboard from the same piece. After tracing the outline and cutting it out, I used the old neck as a router template to accurately duplicate the shape.   Then I routed the truss rod channel, installed the truss rod and glued on the fingerboard. Next, I sanded a radius into the fingerboard. This part was a lot of work but the radius turned out perfect. Finally it was time to shape the neck. I started out with a spokeshave to remove the bulk of the material. Then I switched to a combination of rasps and files to fine tune the shape. Finally, several hours of sanding were required to smooth it all out. I sanded it up to 400 grit before applying several coats of clear laquer.
The end result came out really good. I left a few of the small details to be finished by my friend as he figures out what hardware will be installed. The neck feels really smooth and I believe it will play great. He was excited to get it back and I’m looking forward to seeing the guitar completed. Check out the build video below.
