Build a simple, sturdy DIY Worktable

I need to set up a dedicated space for working on guitars. I don’t want to have to put all my guitar specific tools away after every job. It takes time and that time is valuable. I decided it was time to make a table to use as that space.

I started out with the tapletop. It’s an old commercially made hardwood top that I had purchased used some time ago. It was in pretty rough shape, so I first flattened it out with my trusty old Stanley #5 hand plane. Once it was reasonably flat, I sanded it out, rounded over the corners, and gave it a good coat of Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). The top was done. Now on to the base.

To build the base, I chose to use standard 2×4’s, as they are pretty inexpensive and readily available. I took my time at the lumber yard, searching through the pile of twisted and bowed boards, to find a few that were good and straight. Next, I cut them down to length and jointed one edge on the jointer. This gave me a nice flat surface for the top to sit on. After pre-drilling and countersinking for some screws, I glued and screwed the square portion of the base together and covered the screw holes with some dowels. All I need now are some legs.

In an effort to make the 2×4’s look just a little better, I decided to taper the legs slightly. This was easily achieved by making the cut on the bandsaw. A tapering jig for the table saw would work well too, but mine is too small to safely accommodate these legs. A couple passes on the jointer cleaned up this cut. Now I could sand everything down, glue the legs on, and secure them with some screws from the underside. Bam, table base complete.

To wrap it all up, I added a coat of BLO to the base, attached the top with some pocket holes and my guitar repair bench is done. I’m happy with the results and glad I decided to make this table. It will be so nice to be able to have a nice spot to do my guitar work. Check out the build video below. Thanks for stopping by.
