Its time to make some new guitar tools. This time I’m making some guitar spatulas. These little guys are used for removing bridges and fretboards. There are many commercial versions available, but you know me, I like to make them when I can.
The construction of these is very similar to knife making. I started out with some metal pallet banding. This is some type of spring steel. Its really hard to drill so I’m using a metal hand punch to punch some holes in it. You can get a punch of your very own HERE (affiliate link). These holes are for some brass pins, to hold on the handles. These pins are cut from some round brass stock. Then I cut out the handles, or scales as they are called in the knife world, from some different species of wood. After laying out and drilling the holes in the scales, I cleaned off the coating on the banding and epoxied them in place. Now on to the fun part.
Time to fire up the belt grinder. I put on my safety gear, a brand new grinding belt, and began shaping the handles. It was really fun to watch the handle shapes come out of the block of wood and epoxy. With the grinding complete, it was on to hand sanding to finalize the shape. I finished them off with a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil.
These turned out really good. I made 3 different styles all based loosely on some of the commercial versions. I’m looking forward to trying these out soon. Check out the video below and let me know what you think.
