Frozen Burst Guitar

Here’s a cool Blue themed burst that reminds me of a very popular animated movie. This is a cool look and not hard to do.
First I sand the body up to 400 grit to make sure its nice and smooth. Next, I’ll tape around the sides of the body. This will help reduce any drips I may get in the finish. I don’t want it to run down the sides of the guitar. Now using a folded up paper towel, I’ll add some Homestead Finishing Products Maple Brown dye, to just enhance the grain a little bit. I’ll sand most of that brown right back off. Only a little will remain in the grain. This is to help build some depth to the final finish. Now I’ll apply a coat of dark blue to the whole top and sand it back off when dry. This time though I’m sanding mostly in the middle, leaving more blue around the outside. Time for the Turquoise. Turquoise gets applied to the middle of the body. We’re almost there now. Lastly, I’ll take a plain paper towel dampened with water, and use it to feather in the colors to a nice fade. The water based dyes are super fun to use this way. You can manipulate the colors around with just a damp paper towel. After this dye has dried, it looks awesome and is ready for finish.
If you haven’t worked with water based dye, I would recommend trying it out. Be sure to sand after applying it because it will raise the grain. I’ve included a couple links below as well as the build video. Have fun!
