There are a lot of things you can make with some horseshoes and a welder. I happen to have a pile of old used horseshoes, and my Brother has a welder. I decided that the 2 of us should make a few things. In order for this to happen, I had to travel across the country to my hometown in Pennsylvania. I know, its terrible that we had to take a road trip, but after 27 hours of driving we arrived on location at my familys Sandblasting and Painting shop.
Before we get to work, this video is just a little different in that its not a step by step, how to style video. This video is aimed at giving you ideas so you can take what we’ve done and run with it. Its meant to help get you excited and thinking about what else can be done with horseshoes.
One thing to note, is that if you are using rusty used material like we are, its very important that you clean the material where you will be welding it. Its almost impossible to get a good weld through rust. You need to get the metal shined up and remove the rust. I used a flap disc in my angle grinder to remove a lot of rust, but as we were working, we used my Brothers Die Grinder. This thing was awesome and worked great. There’s some affiliate links below if you’d like to pick one up. I highly recommend these if you do much metalwork and have an air compressor.
For the construction of our projects, we used a MIG Welder with shielding gas. The gas helps you get a much cleaner weld. You could stick weld these too if that’s what you have to use. It will work just fine. Sometimes, I feel I can get a better weld on rusty material with a stick welder but it depends on the type of rod you use. For our projects, we’ll stick with MIG Welding.
Check out the video of our projects below. I hope you get some ideas and decide to try making your own creations. The sky is the limit. Have fun, work safely and make cool stuff!
