Making a 3 Tiered Brochure Holder

Up the road a few miles from my house, is a little Farmers Market. Its a small hometown market with cool vendors. Today’s project is a 3 tiered brochure holder, that will be used at this market. Lets get started.

I chose some offcuts of mahogany and maple for this project. I began by jointing a piece of mahogany on the jointer and then cutting it down to size on the table saw. After cutting the larger pieces, I resawed the remaining chunk on my band saw. This would give me a few thinner boards that I then sanded on the drum sander. With the boards flat, I could cut them to their final lengths. This takes care of the pieces for the center section, and with some glue, pin nails, and clamps, I assembled the center and set it aside to dry while I worked on the sides.

To make the sides I had to use some maple and create a wider panel. This was a simple glue up, and required nothing fancy. With my new wider panel glued up, I could now mark out my cuts for the sides. I wanted to keep it a bit abstract so I measured out the locations for the feet, and then roughly sketched out the rest of the shape. This kept it from looking too refined. I stuck the 2 pieces together with double sided tape, and headed to the bandsaw to cut the rough shape out. After cutting the pieces, sanding the edges smooth and using the router to bevel the edge, its time to finish the assembly.

To assemble the sides, I’m using only glue. This will provide plenty of strength. I’ll glue and clamp them into place. Once its dry, its time for some beloved hand sanding in preparation for finishing.

For the finish, I’ll wipe on a couple coats of Boiled Linseed Oil. This is a super simple finish and really helps bring out the figure in this wood. With the brochure holder completed, its ready for the market.

I’m super happy with the way this turned out. Check out the build video below. Thanks for stopping by.
