Well, its summertime. Summertime means Popsicles. Popsicles mean cold hands. Cold Hands are uncomfortable. Lets fix that.
I’ve been wanting to do some leather work for a while now, and have been slowly getting a few tools and materials together. I now have enough of the special tools to make some more basic projects. I think a little leather project would help Hayley and I out quite nicely.
I used a couple small scraps of leather I had and cut them down to size. Using some wood glue I glued the pieces together where I wanted the stitches. Wood glue doesn’t seem to be the main glue used in leather working, but I thought it would hold well enough until I got it sewed together. Turns out, it worked fine. Then using a grooving tool, I cut a small groove where the stitching would go. Now I can use some leather chisels to punch holes for the stitching. These chisels punch the holes at the right distance apart to get good spacing. I just followed along the groove until I had it punched all the way around. Time to stitch.
I decided on a saddle stitch for this little project. A saddle stitch uses a needle at each end of the thread. I took a piece of waxed thread, loaded it up with a needle at each end and began stitching. This is where I ran into the most trouble. The stitching itself went great, but I had the hardest time getting the needles through the holes. I’m not sure what I was doing wrong, but I ended up using pliers to pull the needles through. I only stabbed myself with the needles a few times. This took a long time, but eventually I got it done and tied the thread off with a square knot, and burnt the end with a lighter so it wouldn’t come undone. I finished these sleeves off with a quick sanding and burnishing of the edges. Bam, project complete. Time for another popsicle!
These worked great. Hayley and I really like these sleeves. No more frozen hands.
I made 2 different versions of this video. Its really just an experiment so see if there’s one that stands out more. You can check them out and see what one you like better. Thanks for watching.
