Making a Finger Jointed Keepsake Box

Remember when I made those Plywood Finger Joint boxes? Its time to revisit those, only this time I’m going to use Solid Wood. If you’d like to see that first video, you can see it here.

For these boxes, I chose to use Lacewood and some Oak Plywood. I always like a combination of light and dark wood, and who doesn’t like Lacewood. I began by cutting the pieces down to size. This meant that I’d quickly discover that Lacewood is very splintery. I had to pull a bunch of splinters. I then cut a  Dado along the bottom edge of the pieces to accept the bottom panel. This is when I realized I may have made a slight error. Lets move on.

Next up, was to cut all the finger joints. I used my jig and blade from the previous video to cut these joints. This went very smoothly. After cutting the bottom panel, I glued up the box, and had to also glue in a couple small patches to cover up my mistake. (you’ll understand when you see the video) After smoothing up the finger joints on the router table, I proceeded to slice the top off the box and route a Rabbet in the lid for the top panel, and add a decorative chamfer to the top as well. Its time to cut and glue in the top panel. Now on to some sanding, and more splinters.

Time for hardware. I decided to drill all of the hardware holes beforehand to hopefully eliminate breaking the tiny brass screws. This was a tedious process but was well worth it as far as I’m concerned. With all of the holes drilled, I decided to do a bit of grain filling. There were some small gaps in a few of the fingers. I used some Wipe on Poly and Sandpaper to sand a slurry of poly into the joints. This filled the gaps and made them look great.

To finish up the box, I added a couple coats of wipe on polyurethane, reinstalled all of the hardware and Bam! We’re done. This thing came out better than I hoped. It looks great. Check out the build video below.
