Repairing Screw Holes in a Hollow Core Door

Now I don’t know about you all, but at my house, repairs can pop up at any time and for about any reason. When problems come up, we need to stop and make these repairs in order to keep our homes in working order. This time, we’ve got a towel bar that has mysteriously been torn off a hollow core door. We’re still trying to figure out how this happened, but it needs to be fixed.

Making repairs in a hollow core door can be a bit tricky since there’s not much material thickness to work with. When I fix stripped out screw holes, I’m really just plugging them. I don’t repair them to reuse the same hole location. For this fix, I raided the kitchen drawer and found a wooden BBQ Skewer.

The skewer was just the right size to fit the torn out screw hole. After cleaning up the area with some sandpaper, I glued in a couple of tiny pieces of skewer. This acts as the filler for the hole. After the glue is dry, I can sand it all nice and smooth and apply a little wood filler to smooth out any imperfections. When the wood putty is dry, I’ll sand it smooth with a sanding sponge and the repair is ready for paint.

This doesn’t take very long to fix and is not hard to do. Just make sure you use an anchor made for hollow core doors when you attach something to a hollow door. Just keep in mind that even with an anchor, you should still never use the towel bar to hang on. Lol.
