How to make a Custom Leather Tool Pouch | My Fence Repair Pouch

I have been helping out my neighbor a bit with some fence repairs. Those cows are always finding a way to break down the fences. If you’ve ever used a pair of fence pliers, you’ll know they are great tools but due to their strange shape, they can be kind of tricky to carry comfortably. The spike on the back always seems to find a way to jab into you or tear your jeans. I decided to come up with a better way, and make one out of leather.

I always enjoy projects like this. Starting with an idea in my head, I sketched out a template on the back of a cereal box. This helps me work out the rough dimensions and begin working through the build in my head. Then I started cutting some leather. I doubled up the back panel and included a belt clip so I could just grab the pouch when needed, clip it on, and not have to worry about lacing it on a belt. When it came time to form the individual pouches, I made some quick forms about the size of the pliers, from some plywood scraps and wet molded the leather to the shape I wanted. After the leather dried, I trimmed them to size and applied some leather dye. I then attached the smaller pouch to the larger on first and got that stitched in place. Then it was just a matter of attaching those to the back panel. I riveted on a hammer loop to the front and stitched the whole thing up. For the finishing touches, I added my brand and a nice coat of Neatsfoot Oil to condition the leather.

I am very happy with the way this pouch turned out. I think this is my favorite leather project to date. Leather is such a fun medium to work with. I’m always so excited to see the pieces take shape and come together. For more details, check out the build video below. Thanks for stopping by.
