Remember the Temple Guitars Neck Jig I built a little while back? Well, since then I’ve been working on making a bunch of 3D Printed parts to add to this jig. I had to first get a 3D Printer. Then I had to learn how to model things in 3D Software. That was a whole project in itself, but here we are with some cool parts to install on my jig.
The first thing to be installed are some hangers that will hold the elastic bands. These just get screwed on to the end of the jig and have a little ledge to hold the bungee cords. Next are some stops that I can adjust to prevent the router from going too far toward the ends of the neck. The 3rd upgrade I’m doing to the frame of the machine is inlaying a Hayley Guitars logo into the side. I made a 3D Printed router template to route the exact shape of the inlay. This worked awesome, and is probably the best fitting inlay I’ve ever done.
Next its on to the carriage. The carriage is the part that holds the cams of the machine. This is where all the neck shaping really happens. In the original build video, I mentioned that I wanted to make some custom cams to make different profiles. Thats is exactly what we have. For this round of upgrades, I’ve made a set of cams that resemble a Fender Modern C profile. They have all the same hole locations as the original wooden cams but they have a custom shape. This is my favorite part of all these upgrades.
Overall, these upgrades worked out great. I ran 2 test necks trying this out. The only issue I really had was with my choice of router bits. I’m not sure what I should be using exactly in order to get the best finish on the wood. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
I still have a couple ideas for other parts I might try, so don’t be surprised if I make a few more changes to the jig. Who knows. Be on the lookout for this jig in use in the near future. Check out the upgrade video below.
