Duplicating Guitar Templates – Do this first when building a guitar

Many guitar builders use templates to create their various parts and pieces. These templates are typically made from MDF or Acrylic. Depending on where you get the templates from, the prices can be close to $100 USD. This price is worth it if the template is good quality, and made by a skilled template maker. In order to keep your new fancy template set in good shape, its important to make a copy of them before starting to work on your new guitar.

Why should I make a copy?
That is a great question. Throughout the building process, you will be using your templates on a router table. If your template comes loose, or some other unfortunate mishap causes your template to come into contact with the spinning router bit, you new template will be damaged or possibly ruined. By making a copy you wont have to buy a new template or spend hours trying to repair it, you simply make a new copy from the original and keep building your guitar.

How do I duplicate my template?
Easy, you will just use your original and a router template bit to carefully make an exact copy of it. I created a video on making a set of duplicates. You can see how I do it.

What material should I use to make my copies?
I like to use 1/2″ or 3/4″ MDF for my templates. I like the thicker templates because its more durable and I have a little leeway when adjusting the bearing height on the router bit. I also keep this in mind when I’m looking to buy a set of templates. I almost never buy a template set made of 1/4″ material. That is one of my criteria in a set of templates. If I can get the same set in 1/4″ or 1/2″ and that is the only difference, I will always choose the 1/2″ thick set. If you can only get your desired templates in 1/4″ thickness, its OK because ideally you will make a copy using 1/2″ or thicker material.

What Router Bits do I need to do this?
I have a whole separate video on the router bits I use to build guitars. It should help you out.

Where can I get high quality templates?
I have ordered templates from several different places, with mixed results. Some were too thin, some weren’t the correct size, or some other issue. The only place I get templates from at this time is Potvin Guitars. I have no affiliation with Potvin Guitars, but their templates are excellent quality, and the customer service is great. I have bought several sets of templates, as well as had some special ones custom made. Mike is extremely helpful and easy to work with. If you’re looking for quality templates made by someone who also builds guitars, this is the place I’d recommend. Tell him I sent you.
