How to make a simple Wooden Spatula | Save your Cast Iron Seasoning

I have recently started using Cast Iron Pans for cooking. Cast Iron pans have been around for hundreds of years and they will last just as long if taken care of properly. I have used cast iron pans in the past, and I did not like the results. Things always stuck and they were hard to clean. I have now discovered that my past experiences were not the result of the pan, but from my lack of knowledge about how to use and care for the pans. I was doing it all wrong.

The most important part of using a cast iron pan is the seasoning. This is what creates the non stick surface. When a pan is well seasoned, you don’t need a Teflon coating. Once you achieve the proper seasoning, everything after that is about maintaining and protecting that seasoning. One of the biggest ways to protect the seasoning is to never use a metal spatula to scrape your pan. The metal can dig into the seasoning and actually begin to scrape it off. There’s a pretty good chance that you may need to scrape some crud from the bottom of your pan once in a while. By making some scrapers (or spatulas) from wood, you can use it in your pan and not worry about damaging the seasoning that you worked hard to achieve.

This project is super simple, and can be made in really only a few minutes. You can customize them however you want. They would be easy to batch out and are great craft fair items, or even gifts for someone you know who uses cast iron. The holidays are fast approaching.

Check out the build process in the video below and stay tuned for more projects as I learn more about how to care for and use cast iron cookware. If you have any tips and tricks for using cast iron, I’d love to hear from you. Also, If you happen to have any old unwanted cast iron pans, send me a message HERE or to homebuiltshop@gmail.com. Put Cast Iron in the subject line. I’d like to find some old crusty pans to do a cast iron restoration video in the future.
