Direct mounting your guitar pickups to the body of your guitar is a great way to go when building your guitar. I feel it looks much cleaner and possibly enhances the response of your pickup.
What is Direct Mounting?
On many guitars the pickups are secured using a pickup ring attached to the top of the instrument. These are typically made from plastic, metal, or wood. The pickup is then suspended from this ring by a screw and spring. The screw is used to adjust the height of the pickup. This method works great and is commony used on thousands of instruments.
Why should I try direct mount pickups?
There are 2 reasons I feel direct mount pickups may be better. By direct mounting you eliminate the trim ring from the top of the guitar. I feel this looks much better as it keeps the guitar top, which is oftentimes a beautiful figured piece of wood, open and unobstructed. There are less holes that need to be drilled into the top. The second reason I like direct mount pickups is going to be a bit controversial to some, but I feel like the response of the pickup changes s little bit for the better. I suppose you could say tone improves, but when you say the word tone in guitar circles, you open yourself up to criticism. Whatever you want to call it, I think it sounds better. When you mount a pickup using a trim ring, the pickup is isolated from the instrument. There is never any direct contact with the body. By direct mounting, the pickup is coupled to the wood by the screws and I believe that this enhances the response of the pickup in some way. I do not have any scientific evidence to back this so this conclusion is totally based on my experience only.
I recommend experimenting with my method of direct mounting pickups to see if can tell any difference. I’d also like to hear your feedback on this as well as your method for direct mounting your guitar pickups.
