Ahh, Black Walnut. A favorite wood choice of many people. It smells great and looks incredible. Its also a species of wood I don’t use very often. Thats why I was excited when I got the opportunity to build these tables. I’ll be making 2 end tables and a coffee table. They will have a walnut top, and welded steel bases. Lets jump right in.
I started out at my local hardwood dealer, JW Hardwoods in Peyton, CO. I was able to do most of the dimensioning of the wood at their shop. It was much easier, and faster, as they have the space to do this efficiently. We even glued up the coffee table top right there. After getting everything cut down, I completed the end table glue ups in my shop. After cleaning up the squeeze out, I ran all the tops through my drum sander, filled in some knots with CA glue, and sanded the pieces nice and smooth. I added a small chamfer to the edges and applied a few coats of wipe on poly to protect the wood surface.
For the steel bases, I welded up a bunch of 1 1/2″ steel tubing. These things turned out super sturdy. I have zero doubts they could be used as emergency jackstands while fixing your car. Lol. After cleaning up the welds, I gave them a coat of satin black paint to match the satin tops. Once it was all dried, I attached the tops and delivered the tables to their home. They turned out great and look awesome. I’m thankful for the opportunity to create these cool tables and work with this awesome black walnut.
