Its time to install the end wedge in the acoustic guitar. The end wedge is a purely decorative element that is designed to cover up the seam between the sides at the end of the guitar. This is a great place to incorporate some design elements used in other areas of the guitar. Since my rosette is spalted maple, I decided to use spalted maple for the end wedge as well.

I made a clear acrylic template that I could use to locate a portion of the spalted maple board that I wanted to use. I could see exactly what the end wedge would look like before making any cuts. Once I found the piece I liked, I roughly cut it out on the band saw. The shooting board was used to true up the sides. Now, I can use the end wedge blank as my saw guide to make the cuts on the end of the guitar body. Some double sided tape and clamps hold it securely while I make the cuts. With the 2 outer cuts made, I used a scrap piece of wood as a guide and made a ton of small kerf cuts in the interior of the wedge. This allowed me to use a chisel to remove the material creating a cavity for the wedge to sit into. After a little cleanup to the cavity, I applied glue and lightly clamped the wedge into the recess. A couple taps with a hammer, wedges the piece into place. Hence the name, End Wedge.

After allowing the glue to dry, I leveled the wedge with the sides using some sandpaper. It turned out great. This was actually much easier than I thought it would be, and I’m really happy with the final results.
