Reclaimed Pallet Wood Sign (for DTY)

DTY Store is a local Colorado Springs Online Retailer, that reached out to me to make this sign for use in their office and some online content. After discussing some ideas, we decided on using some pallets from their own warehouse to make the sign. If you want to check them out, their website is https://www.dtystore.com/ and you can use coupon code HomeBuilt10 to save 10% on your order.

I started out in the warehouse, tearing down some pallets. I had to take my time to make sure I didn’t destroy the boards as I took the pallets apart. Then I hauled them all back to my shop and began the process of removing all the nails. This also took quite a while to complete. After that, I sent the boards through my planer to get them all the same thickness. I only planed the back side so as to retain the crusty pallet wood on the front. After jointing the edges lightly with a hand plane, to remove the large gaps, I glued the panel up using some cleats on the back. These were also tacked in place with some pin nails.

Now comes the fun stuff. I located an old overhead projector and projected the DTY logo onto the glued up panel. Then I traced it out using a pencil. Using my jigsaw, I cut out only the letters of the sign. The logo also has some lines that needed to be carved out. I almost used my router and freehand cut the lines but changed my mind and opted to use a chisel and hand carve them. Once the lines were carved, I painted them in with some black acrylic paint. This was to help define them a bit. Now I grabbed a propane torch and burned in some shading to match the original logo. This was super fun, and smelled like a campfire. Finally I applied a coat of stain to the whole sign. I had to sand back some of the stain to retain the torch shading. This was all sealed up with some Danish Oil. Now on to the back.

In order to make this sign light up, I used some LED Strip lights. These are awesome because they’re self adhesive backing and remote control make them super versatile. I installed them around the letters and secured them even more using hot glue. I secured the remote control sensor behind a couple of nail holes to keep it hidden. This worked out perfectly. Now I could install a back that had the inside painted to reflect the light. Now I could stain and oil the back and the sign was complete.

The DTY pallet wood sign turned out great. DTY also gave me a coupon code to share. Just use code HomeBuilt10 at checkout to save 10% on your order.
