Turning a Fail into a Sweet Clock

Do you remember that pine guitar body I tried to make from those pallets that busted into pieces on me? Yeah me too. Its time to redeem myself from that disaster and make something awesome.

I was recently inspired by a saying that my 7 year old daughter said to me when we were discussing something that had gone wrong in the shop that day. “Mistakes are Proof you are Trying”. I was so inspired by this saying that I knew it was time to get this project done.

I started out by glueing the broken pieces back on with dowels to exaggerate the break. Then, I used my local librarys laser cutter to engrave the wood and to cut out the saying and wooden clock numbers. With the engraving complete, I drilled a recess in the back to accept the clock works. Then I added some Crystalac Gel Stain that I mixed up with some blue dye to the top. After a light sanding and a second coat of dye, I gave the body a 45 Degree chamfer around the edge. This gave a nice crisp line around the dyed top. Now the fun part.

I taped the scrap piece from the laser cutting onto the body. This is my template to keep the letters aligned. Using some CA Glue, I glued each letter to the body. Then I could remove the scrap template and reveal the results. It worked awesome. Now I could temporarily install the clock mechanism, and locate the position of the numbers. Some more CA glue held them in place as well. A few coats of satin spray laquer finished the piece.

I could not be prouder of the way this project came out. I’m so inspired by my daughters saying that I also decided to put this saying on some shirts available in my Teespring Store. Check it out if you want one. I hope you too can take some inspiration from this. What may look like a fail at the time, could very well be something you’re very proud of if you get inspired by it. Check out the video below. Thanks for stopping by, now go make some mistakes!
