If its been a while since you’ve sharpened your lawnmower blades, or maybe you’ve never sharpened them, its time to get them fixed up.
Sharpening your lawnmower blades is not hard to do. I like to do it at the beginning of the mowing season, and periodically throughout the season, as needed. Some signs that your blades are dull may be uneven cutting of the grass. If the tops are ragged and torn after mowing, this is a sign its time to sharpen. The torn blades are bad for your grass. Lets get them sharpened up.
I’m going to let you choose your method of sharpening but the most accessible method I think is by using a file. Files are inexpensive and can be found at stores all over. This doesn’t create a bunch of noise and sparks but it does take a while to do. I feel this way has the most control though as the material removal is much slower. I’ve included some Affiliate Links below if you’d like to pick up some of these items.
If you want to step it up a notch, you can use an angle grinder with a grinding disc. This is much quicker but does make a lot of noise. Just wear your safety gear if you sharpen with an angle grinder. You don’t want to get hot sparks in your eyes.
No matter the method of sharpening you choose, next, you will need to balance your lawnmowers blade. Having a balanced blade is important because as you mower blade spins at high RPM, if one side is lighter than the other is will wobble and you risk damaging your machine. Think about a washing machine. Have you ever had a load of laundry become unbalanced, and suddenly your washing machine sounds like its going to explode? Your blade being unbalanced is very similar. My method of blade balancing requires nothing more than a nail, and a scrap of wood. Its very simple and has worked for me for years. There are commercially available balancers too if you’d rather use one of those. Once you have the blade balanced, you can now put it back on.
Now you’re ready to get back to work. Your lawn will thank you. Watch the video to see how easy this really is. Thanks for stopping by.
