If you’ve ever made a wooden box on the table saw, you’ll know that it can get a little tricky when it’s time to cut the top free. If its not supported correctly, it can flop around and potentially be unsafe. In this method, I keep the lit completely attached while using the table saw. Then we remove it with a simple hand saw. This is my personal favorite method.

First, set your table saw blade so that it is just under the thickness of the box sides. We don’t want to cut all the way through the box. Then adjust your fence to where you want to make the cuts. Now pass the box over the blade on all 4 sides. You should leave a thin web of wood in the saw kerf that you can easily cut with a flush trim saw by hand.

I like this method, because the thin web of wood keeps the entire lid stable. You don’t have to use shims or clamps or anything. The table saw does most of the work, and you quickly cut the lid free by hand.
