Yes, I screwed up. Somehow, I didn’t make the neck pocket deep enough on this guitar. I didn’t realize it until I started setting it up. I couldn’t get the action correct on it. Now I need to somehow make the pocket deeper without taking the entire thing apart.
This is the 2nd time I’ve made this error. The first time, I just cobbled something together and got the job done. At that time, I told myself if this ever happened again, I was going to make something a little more convenient to solve the problem. Well here it it. LOL!
I used a piece of 1/2″ Baltic Birch plywood to make this jig. It ended up being the perfect thickness for this. Anything thinner wouldn’t have worked as well. I cut a hole that would fit over the neck pocket, and made some recesses for the pickups. I didn’t cut the pickup recess all the way through because I wanted the jig to cover the pickups while I was routing. This would help keep dust out of them. After sanding the jig nice and smooth, I applied some tape to the guitar body as well as the jig and glued the jig down using some Starbond CA glue. This will keep it in place while routing. Now I can use my router to rout the pocket to the correct depth. It worked perfectly.
While a jig like this may not apply to your situation, I hope it gives you some kind of ideas as to how you might use a jig or fixture to solve whatever problem you may be facing. I enjoy seeing how people solve particular problems. You never know when you might need that bit of information. Thanks for stopping by.
