Making a Custom Leather Tool Pouch

Since I have started milling my own slabs and lumber with my chainsaw mill, I discovered there are several tools I need on hand for making adjustments and setting up the mill. In an effort to be as efficient as I can be, I want a way to keep all the tools on me while I’m working. I decided that a tool pouch I could wear on my belt, would be the best option. After looking at some of the commercially available tool pouches, I decided that the only way I could get exactly what I wanted was to make my own.

I spent some time making some sketches and mocking up the shape I wanted, and finally settled on a design. It was time to start cutting some leather. I started out with a nice piece of 6/7 ounce leather. This is a nice sturdy weight. Its not the heaviest but I felt it was a good weight for this project. Following my pattern, I cut the pieces and then wet molded the pockets to fit the tools. After some glueing, dyeing, punching and a lot of hand stitching, I was able to assemble this custom tool pouch that fits the tools I need perfectly.

I am very proud of the way this pouch came out. I couldn’t be happier. For me, this is one of those projects that upon completion gives you the confidence to take on anything. I think I’ve definitely caught the leather bug, and now want to make everything out of leather. Follow along with me in the build video below. Thanks for stopping by.
