Making a Frame to Display the first Hayley Guitars Headstock

Recently, I began doing a little bit of shop cleanup and organization. During the cleanup process, I found a prototype version of the Hayley Guitars Headstock. This was made when I was mocking up the design of the headstock. The recess in it was carved away with a chisel and a knife. I want to keep this, and have a way to display it in the shop. I think its a cool piece of Hayley Guitars history.

I decided I’d make a simple frame to surround the headstock. I used the very last pieces I have of my Grandpas barn to make a simple mitered picture frame. This was made by ripping the pieces to width and then using THIS TABLE SAW SLED to make the 45 degree cuts on the corners. Remember to always make 1 cut on one side of the blade, and the mating piece cut on the other side of the blade. This will make up for any inconsistencies in your sled.

With the outer frame cut to size, I marked out the middle of those pieces and drilled some holes that would accept some dowels. I want to suspend the headstock by dowels on all 4 sides. Next, I inserted the dowels and laid the headstock in the middle. Then using a small square I marked the edges of the dowels on the headstock. This showed me right where I needed to drill the holes in the headstock. I used a small handscrew clamp to hold the headstock in place at the drill press.

Now, all I needed to do was add some glue, and put this whole thing together. This was pretty straightforward, but did end up being a little bit tricky once I introduced the dowels. With the help of a few clamps, I got it all together. After the glue dried I drilled an angled hole in the back so I could hang this on a nail. At the time, I didn’t have any picture frame hangers so I had to make it work. By drilling the hole on an angle, it helps keep the frame on the nail.  I then gave it a good sanding, followed by a couple coats of Homemade Finish. (You will find the video for this finish below)

I’m happy I found this headstock. For me, its a little piece of history that I’ll enjoy having on the wall. Be on the lookout for it in future videos.
