Replace the cord on a Porter Cable Router | Save Money, Do It Yourself

A friend and fellow guitar builder recently gave me a router that he wasn’t using anymore. (Thanks Greg)This router will be a great addition to the shop. It’s an older Porter Cable model that has a bad power cord. The cord has been taped up so that it will work. I want to replace this cord so the router will be both reliable as well as safe to use. Do you have a power tool that is in a similar state? Its time to replace that old power cord or worn out bearing so you can continue using your tools.

For my router, this cord replacement, is a pretty easy repair. I wanted to show you how easy it is to repair an old tool for much less money than buying a new tool. I was able to order a replacement cord from E Replacement Parts. This isn’t at all sponsored by them, but they have tons of parts for all kinds of power tools.

The actual process goes by really quick. I just had to remove the top cap of the router, cut the connectors from the old cord, unscrew the ground and the cord was off. I popped the new cord into place, cut the wires to length then reconnected the wires making sure the colors matched up with the old ones. I used some crimp on connectors to make the connections. After securing all the wires, I replaced the top cover and the repair was complete. This new to me router is ready to be put back into service.

If you have an old tool that has a worn out part, see if you can get a replacement part and get your tool fixed. This will ultimately save you a fair bit of money and prolong the life of your tools.
