Have you ever made a bowl using your router? Router bowls are a fun project. For this bowl, I designed some Guitar Pick shaped templates that can be printed out on a 3D Printer.

I found a board in my scrap pile that would work great for this project. Its about 1″ thick and will make a nice shallow bowl. I first had to make a simple jig to keep the templates aligned. Then I could attach the outer template to my piece of wood using some double sided tape. I then cut out the blank on the bandsaw, and uses a small template bit on my router table to flush trim part of the bowl. Next I removed the template, and using a different template bit, finished routing the outside of the bowl. Now I can place the bowl blank into the jig and install the top template. This aligns the center of the bowl perfectly with the outside, keeping the outer walls of the bowl nice and even.
Over at the drill press, I used a forstner bit to remove the bulk of the material inside the bowl. This is important as we don’t want the router bit to have to do all the work. With most of that material removed, Its time to put the Amana Tools 45983 Bowl and Tray Bit in my trim router and using the top template, route out the inside of the bowl. The bowl and tray bit does a great job at smoothing up the edges as well as making a nice rounded bottom corner. After a little final sanding, I applied a coat of boiled linseed oil to finish this project up.
These are a fun project, and would be great to batch out a few to give as gifts. You don’t have to make them out of one piece of wood either. You could glue up a block of different woods similar to a cutting board to make some neat designs. Be creative, and have some fun with these.
