The month of April seems to be a great time to build outdoor projects. Spring is in full effect and the outdoors begins to come back to life. This means the return of outdoor wildlife. Could there be any better project than a bird feeder, or bird house, for spring? I think not.

In several previous live stream episodes, we have been talking about some sort of build along project, where we could all make our version of basically the same project. We decided that it should be a bird feeder, or a bird house. There were no specific plans, just the idea. Everyone could do their own thing, and at the end of April, we would all share our projects on the Home Built Workshop Facebook group page. This worked out awesome. There were several people who built along and shared their work on the page.

I knew I wanted to do this build with my Daughter, but since we made a couple bird houses several years ago, we decided to make ours a feeder. We chose to make a platform feeder since we have had a squirrel around lately. This would allow the squirrel to take advantage of the feeder as well. We used aspen for our feeder, and sealed it with polyurethane to protect it. Since our feeder is open to the elements, the bottom is made from window screen to allow airflow so the food doesn’t get soggy or moldy.

We had a blast making this feeder. I cherish the time I get to spend working with my daughter. We have so much fun. If you have children in your life, I highly encourage you to find something you can do together like this. If building things isn’t your thing, then maybe its fishing, camping, or just going for a nice walk. The time spent together can’t be beat.
